TEXAS CDL / STUDY RESOURCE

Texas CDL General Knowledge: what to review.

Build a strong foundation in commercial vehicle safety and operating principles.

Why General Knowledge matters

General Knowledge covers foundational concepts that commercial drivers must understand. Use the current Texas DPS handbook to identify the exact material applicable to your test.

Focus on understanding why safe practices matter, not only on remembering terminology.

Vehicle inspections and safe operation

Study the purpose of vehicle inspections and how defects can affect safety. Review safe driving principles, space management and how vehicle characteristics influence stopping and turning.

Make a note of topics you cannot clearly explain without looking at the handbook. Those are strong candidates for additional review.

Hazards and changing conditions

Consider how weather, visibility, road conditions, fatigue and other factors affect driving decisions. The handbook is the authoritative reference for specific procedures and rules.

Practice effectively

After each topic, use practice questions to identify weak spots. Review incorrect answers against the handbook and revisit them later.

RoadReady combines structured lessons and practice tools to support this approach.
