Start with the official handbook
Use the latest Texas DPS Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers Handbook as your primary source. Identify the license class and any endorsements relevant to your goal.
Read the handbook’s applicable sections carefully. Pay particular attention to safe operation, inspections, hazard awareness and any vehicle-specific material.
Break study time into small sessions
Choose one topic per session. Read for understanding, then summarize the key points in your own words. Finish with a short review of questions or concepts you found difficult.
Short, regular sessions can be easier to sustain than waiting for a single long study day. Adjust the pace to your own schedule and progress.
Use mistakes as a study map
Keep a list of concepts you miss repeatedly. Group them by topic rather than memorizing individual answer choices. Return to the source material to understand the rule behind each answer.
When your results improve, revisit older topics so that earlier learning stays fresh.
Check official requirements
The knowledge tests, skills tests, medical requirements and training obligations applicable to you can vary. Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements may apply in certain situations.
Consult Texas DPS and FMCSA directly for current eligibility, testing and training rules. RoadReady is not an ELDT provider.
